Tactile Urbanism for Pedestrian Safety

The Lokhandwala Pedestrian Square project aimed to transform a high-risk intersection at the New Link Road–Lokhandwala Road junction in Mumbai into a safer, more inclusive public space. Although Lokhandwala is known for its walkability and vibrant street life, this key junction currently lacks proper pedestrian infrastructure, traffic signals, and safe crossings—creating daily hazards for people on foot. The project proposes to reimagine this space by reallocating road area for pedestrians, calming traffic, improving sidewalks, and introducing clear crossing paths and refuge islands. It seeks to create a safer, more balanced street environment that reflects the needs of residents, commuters, informal vendors, and local businesses.

Using a tactical urbanism approach, the project will test low-cost, temporary design changes such as painted pedestrian zones, speed breakers, and barricades to study their impact. Over a two-week trial, the team will gather feedback through user surveys and traffic observations. Public participation is central to the process, with plans to involve artists and community members in shaping the space.
